Gallery of M. A. Bazovský was established in 1969 and is named after Miloš Alexander Bazovský who lived his last years of life in Trenčín. It offers a unique collection of Slovak art of 20th century, as well as permanent exposition of the works of M. A. Bazovský. Visitors can admire the author´s distinctive work focused on the Slovak countryside, still-life and figural compositions. In his work, Bazovský brilliantly, emotionally and persuasively captures the essence of the Slovak countryside and fundamental philosophy of its citizens. The gallery´s collecting and exhibiting activities focus on Slovak fine art of the 20th and 21st century.
In addition to the works of M. A. Bazovský, the the gallery includes a remarkable collection of works of authors from the Trenčín region as well as artists of nationwide significance. Short-term temporary exhibitions organised either as collective or individual events allow the gallery to present works from the Slovak and international art scene.
Since its foundation in 1969, the gallery found its home in baroque Piarist monastery on Mierové Square No. 7. In 2001, the gallery moved to a historical building from the 19th century. The three-wing three-storey object with richly adorned facade used to be a Jewish residential building with nine apartments. Built sometimes around 1881 – 1884, it was bought by Eugen Maršovský and his wife Adela. In 1888, they added a storage building, a carriage house and a barn. In 1945, the building passed under the government´s administration, and in 1965 it became property of the Czechoslovak Republic. Prior to its reconstruction in 1996 to house the M. A. Bazovský Gallery, the building had served as the seat of secondary vocational school.
