M. R. Štefánik Memorial in the City Park

The M. R. Štefánik Memorial is located in the city park, near the Karol Pádivý Elementary School of Arts. It depicts the broken wing of the aircraft in which General M. R. Štefánik crashed on 4 May 1919 near Bratislava while returning home to Slovakia. Štefánik came from the Trenčín Region, from the village of Košariská, which is located in the Myjava district.

The memorial was unveiled on 17 September 1998 and its author is the academic painter Juraj Oravec. The bust placed on the memorial is a fragment of the original memorial by J. Pospíšil, which was built in 1938 but destroyed in 1953 for ideological reasons.

Inscription on the memorial:

Astronomer, aviator, general of the French army, co-founder of the first Czechoslovak Republic.
