Trenčín will be the European Capital of Culture 2026

Trenčín has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2026, gaining a unique opportunity to present its cultural identity and future vision to Europe. The title was officially awarded to the city on December 10, 2021, based on the decision of an international jury chaired by Paulina Florjanowicz. Trenčín triumphed over eight Slovak cities, beating Nitra and Žilina in the final round.

Winning Project: Cultivating Curiosity

The winning project, titled Cultivating Curiosity, presents a comprehensive plan for developing the city and the region through culture. It focuses on six main areas: nature, city, people, culture, community, and Europe. These themes are symbolically reflected on the cover of the bid book. It was ceremonially handed over to the Slovak Ministry of Culture.

Preparation and Implementation

Trenčín 2026 is not just about cultural events but also includes significant investments in infrastructure and public spaces. In the coming years, extensive renovations are planned that will transform the face of the city.

Community Involvement

The project emphasizes the involvement of local residents and communities. The goal is to create vibrant neighborhoods and encourage citizen participation in cultural life. One example is the Festival of Living Neighborhoods, which will take place in various parts of the city outside the center.

International Dimension

Trenčín shares the title of European Capital of Culture with the Finnish city of Oulu, which will present its project Cultural Climate Change. Together, the two cities will represent Europe’s cultural diversity and creativity in 2026.
