County house

The County House is one of the landmarks of Mierové Square and ranks among the most important historic buildings in Trenčín. For decades, it served as the seat of the county administration and later the museum. Today, following an extensive renovation, it has come back to life as a vibrant cultural venue.

From the Illésházy palace to the Trenčín museum

Originally, the building was the town palace of the influential and wealthy Hungarian noble family, the Illésházys. In 1734, it became the seat of Trenčín County, which rebuilt it between 1760 and 1764 into the representative form it retains today. The façade was adorned with the Greek goddess of justice, Themis, symbolising justice and prosperity. You can still see the large county coat of arms and the historic inscription commemorating the reign of Maria Theresa.

After the dissolution of the county administration, the building became the home of the Trenčín Museum in 1940. Generations of Trenčín residents knew it as the place where they discovered the region’s history, archaeology, nature, and folk culture. The museum remained here until 2023, when the building closed in preparation for a major renovation.

A new chapter for the County house

Between 2025 and 2026, the County House underwent its most extensive renovation in decades. Restored interiors, façade, and courtyard have given this historic landmark a new lease of life. Today, it offers exhibition and gallery spaces, as well as a venue for exhibitions, intimate concerts, literary evenings, and other cultural events, once again becoming a lively meeting place for culture, art, and the community.
