Early Baroque Monastic Complex

The building of the original Jesuit monastery college, located on Mierové Square, is today the seat of the Piarist Grammar School of J. Branecký. It was built between 1653 and 1662 on the site of four burgher houses, in close proximity to the Church of St. Francis Xavier. The four-storey complex consists of the college and the school, with an inner courtyard (paradise courtyard) in the centre. During the 17th and 18th centuries, two additional wings were added, oriented towards Palackého Street, where the town fortifications once stood.

The rich stucco decoration of the refectory and the pharmacy “At the Holy Spirit” reveals the influence of Italian stucco masters. On the main façade facing Mierové Square, painted sundials from 1711 have been preserved between the windows on the second floor, depicting the Garden of Eden with the Tree of Knowledge. Even older sundials, dating back to the mid-17th century, can be found on the courtyard façade.
