The City Tower – Entrance

The City Tower is a remnant of the gate of the originally medieval fortifications of the town of Trenčín. It was part of one of the two entrance gates and was also known as the Lower Gate. Its “sister” – the Upper Gate – stood at the opposite end of the square, in close proximity to the County House. The City Tower has six floors and is 32 meters high. After the Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier, it is the second tallest structure on the square. Both city gates, as well as the fortification walls of the town, were built of stone. Construction began at the time when Trenčín was elevated to a free royal town with the right to fortify itself, based on the Privilege of King Sigismund from 1412. The Lower Gate was also called the Turkish Gate, as attacks by Turkish troops threatened the city from the south. Set out on a short trip to discover one of Trenčín’s most important landmarks. Climbing it, you will face 54 steps.
