Roman inscription on the rock

The Roman inscription on the castle rock is currently unavailable for viewing due to reconstruction.

Imagine that almost 2000 years ago, Roman soldiers were present in the territory of Trenčín. This is evidenced by an inscription carved into a massive rock cliff. The Roman inscription from 179 is one of the few written records confirming the presence of Romans in Central Europe. It was carved into the castle rock below Trenčín Castle. The text commemorates the Romans’ victory over the Germanic Quadi tribe. No need to translate it yourself—we’ll tell you what it says: “To the victory of the emperors and the army of 855 soldiers of the Second Legion based at Laugaricio.” Made to order of Marcus Valerius Maximianus, a legate of the Second Auxiliary Legion.”

If you want to see the Roman inscription, go inside the historic Hotel Elizabeth, situated at the beginning of Mierové námestie (the square), once known as the Hotel Tatra. Just walk through the hotel lobby and go to the second floor, where through the glass wall, you can read the ancient message of the Roman Legion Commander Maximianus. Apart from this rare historical symbol, you will certainly be enchanted by the luxurious and elegant interior of the hotel complex. Treat yourself to a quality lunch or coffee on the terrace or in the restaurant like the former Trenčín nobles, for which the hotel represented a part of the social and cultural venue in the city.
