Almost 2000 years old Roman inscription was carved into rock under the castle in 179 A. D. The army of Emperor Marcus Aurelius were fighting against Quad in the territory of then Laugaricio, todays Trenčín. In honour of the victory a memorial inscription was carved into the rock, which translates as follows: To the victory of the Emperors and the army that resided in Laugaricio, numbering 855 soldiers of the II. Legion, made by the order of M. V. Maximianus, legate of the II. Auxiliary legion. The Roman inscription can be seen from the terrace of Hotel Elizabeth situated at the Square (Mierové námestie).
