Where stones remember roman soldiers

The heart of Trenčín is Mierové Square. Simply stand in the middle, turn around and you will immediately see what makes it so special. Your view will instantly be drawn to the striking Plague Column and the elegant silhouette of the Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier. Its doors are usually closed, but peek through the grille to admire the breathtaking illusionist ceiling paintings. They will transport you to a completely different world.

From the square, just take a few steps and you will find yourself at the white Town Tower. Since the Middle Ages, it has served as a gateway into the city. If you climb its stairs you can enjoy art exhibitions inside and, at the top, be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire city.

From there, you can continue uphill along the covered Parish Steps. They will lead you to Mariánske Square and the Parish Church, where another beautiful panorama of the city opens up before you, with a maze of red rooftops. Nearby, you will also find the mysterious, medieval-looking Executioner’s House and the Gothic St. Michael’s Ossuary.

Trenčín castle

The true crown of Trenčín, however, is the majestic Trenčín Castle, once the seat of the legendary lord of the Váh and Tatra regions, Matúš Čák. Standing on its walls, you get the feeling that you are on the roof of the world. The castle can be reached directly from the city centre. Nature lovers can use the southern entrance through the forest park in spring and summer. Check the opening hours of the southern fortifications entrance before your visit.

When you later make your way back down into the city, don’t forget to visit the Hotel Elizabeth. Through its windows, you can admire the unique Roman Inscription carved into the rock, dating back to AD 179. It is a fascinating feeling to look at authentic evidence that Roman legions camped in this very place almost two thousand years ago.

For architecture lovers, the Trenčín Synagogue is also a major attraction. Another pleasant surprise is the M. A. Bazovský Gallery – always check its current programme before visiting, but the architecture of the building itself is worth seeing. The County House on Mierové Square. It is a historic landmark, now restored as a vibrant space for exhibitions, culture and events.

When the city slows down: experiences, relaxation and coffee culture

Trenčín, however, is not just an open-air history book. Above all, it is a city with an incredibly relaxed atmosphere. When walking among the sights wears you out, head to Štúrovo Square, which locals simply call “Šturák”. Take a seat at one of the café terraces, listen to the splash of the fountain with its water sprite statue and simply soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

If you are looking for nature and tranquillity, just walk a few metres to Brezina Forest Park. This green oasis is perfect for running, cycling the Divotrails or relaxing beneath the trees. If you are looking for a little adrenaline, the Tarzania rope park awaits you high among the trees.

For those who want to discover the city from a different perspective and without the effort, the Matúš Čák tourist train is a great choice, regularly travelling through the city streets during the season. But for a truly romantic experience, head out onto the waters of the Váh River. A sightseeing boat cruise or an exclusive Armanis experience cruise will show you the city panorama with the castle in the background from a perspective you can never experience from the shore.

What’s more, the city is a perfect base for further exploration. If you decide to stay for several days, trips to the surrounding area can take you to the charming spa town of Trenčianske Teplice, nearby cycling routes or the ruins of other medieval castles that line the Váh River.
